Takt time can be defined as the maximum time allowed to produce a product in order to meet demand. It is derived from the German word taktzeit which translates to clock cycle. The pace of production flow would then be set based on this takt time. Product flow is expected to fall within a pace that is less than or equal to the takt time. In a lean manufacturing environment, the pace time is set equal to the takt time. The following shows how takt time is calculated…
Takt Time = Available daily work time / Daily product requirement
For example, a production line is expected to produce 5000 parts in an 8 hour shift. We could calculate the takt time as follows…
Takt Time = 8 hours / 5000 parts = 0.0016 hours
Because the takt time in hours is so small, we could then express it in seconds by multiplying the takt time by the constant of 3600 seconds/hour as follows…
Takt Time = 0.0016 hours × 3600 seconds/hour = 5.76 seconds
The resulting takt time of 5.76 seconds is the maximum time per part allowed in order to meet the 5000 part daily requirements for an 8-hour workday.
Vorne large digital takt time efficiency displays enable you to set the pace using your takt time and monitor your production with an immediate understanding of whether you're ahead, behind, or right on schedule. Here's how this is accomplished.
1. An internal counter increments by the scale factor, typically one, every takt time interval, resulting in a pace or target count. The pace count is the expected product count at that moment of time. This is a process variable and can be displayed if so desired
2. Usually a second counter is used and is incremented at the completion of a product resulting in the product or actual count at that moment of time. This is also a process variable and can also be displayed if so desired.
3. With the pace count and product count, other process variables can be automatically calculated and displayed such as differential count, efficiency, and percent of goal.
Like all Vorne products, you get a quality display in a rugged industrial enclosure, accompanied by expert technical support. With your choice of display color (standard red, optional green, yellow or tricolor in 4" discrete only) and digit sizes ranging from 4" to 12", Vorne Industries takt time efficiency displays have the flexibility you require to serve your demanding industrial production display applications and wherever the Kaizen or lean manufacturing philosophy is implemented.
